Bishops Stortford Hockey Club

The 4th team clinched promotion and left themselves needing only 1 point to win their league with a comfortable 5-1 win over second placed Stevenage 3s. The match started tense with both teams needing the win, and early chances were missed by both teams. However Stortford took the lead mid way through the first half courtesy of Nick Prowse. The lead was doubled shortly afterwards through Alex Dias although he didn't know too much about it as he deftly deflected the ball at the back post. 2-0 at half time still didn't feel comfortable but Stortford continued to press and scored 3 further goals to ensure the win, with Nick Prowse securing his hatrick. A late goal was no consolation for Stevenage as Atortford showed why they are top of the league. This season has been a real team performance by all players involved in the 4s and a huge thanks to all of you for your effort and hard work.

The Lady Masters were in action this weekend at the Herts 040’s tournament at Broxbourne on Sunday and we won. The team played some excellent hockey playing together very well although it was the first time all the players had been together for sometime.

We played a round robin tournament against the following clubs:

Letchworth 2-0 Rachel Armitage running play, and Karen Jones short corner strike by Pippa cleanly put away by Karen at the post.

The Location and Club

Bishop’s Stortford is on the Hertfordshire and Essex border half way between London and Cambridge. Ideally situated about 30 miles north of London Bishop’s Stortford is close to Stansted Airport, from which EasyJet and Ryanair, the low cost airlines, operate, providing low cost and easy access to most of Europe for young would-be travellers! The Role

This role of Overseas Player/Coach was originally established 12 years ago and is a joint venture between a major Independent School and a local sports club, which has been a great success. There are some coaching duties from Monday to Thursday at Bishops Stortford College, which is a leading hockey playing school, and where accommodation is provided in one of the boarding houses in return for some evening duties. Bishop’s Stortford College has an enviable record in schools hockey producing internationals. Charlie Bannister, the present Master i/c Hockey is also Coach of the current England U16 squad.

The role of Player / Coach involves the following commitments:
• League matches every Saturday, cup matches on some Sunday afternoons
• 1st team training on Wednesday evenings
• 1st team Ladies training on Tuesday evenings
• Coaching the Colts Section on one midweek evening and Sunday mornings. Helping with under 14 and under 16 teams.
• Coaching hockey at BS College during the week.
All our overseas players have made many friends during their stay and have always commented on how friendly the Club and Bishops Stortford College are, and have really enjoyed the experience.

The club runs 6 men’s teams and 4 ladies teams, and has a thriving junior section. BSHC Men’s 1st XI plays in the East Premier division, a feeder league to the National League, with amongst others Cambridge City, Bluharts, St Albans, Bedford, Peterborough, and Harleston Magpies.

The Candidate

We are looking for a very talented young player to be part of the Men’s 1st XI, possibly a State U21 player, with some coaching experience. Because the role involves working with children, the successful applicant will need a CRB clearance and certification by a Coaching Authority.
We will need details of coaching experience and two references.
Ideally the age range we are looking at, is between 20 and 27 years of age


The Package

• Good accommodation and all meals are provided in a student teacher hostel, sharing with other overseas sports coaches, during term time and for the duration of employment.
• BSHC also pays a consideration (a figure that is negotiable) which can be seen as spending money.

The Mixed team won 3-1 at Harlow and every men's and women's side was represented in the line-up. Steve Maxfield hit two against his old club and Richard Temple got the third.
